Worst Disaster or Finest Hour? It’s All In The Perspective
This could be the worst disaster NASA ever experienced.
With all due respect, sir, I believe this is gonna be our finest hour.
I love the two perspectives this quote presents: Doom and gloom or greatest victory?
I think the parallels with the VET sector are obvious, but how many of you approach the Regulator, an audit or even the word ‘compliance’ with dread versus woo hoo?
Our thoughts form our intentions which lead to our actions so which movie role are you (and everyone in your team) playing at your RTO: NASA Director or Gene Kranz?
And if there’s too many NASA reps in your team and not enough Gene’s, what’s one thing you can do to change this?
Let’s look at thing from a… umm, from a standpoint of status. What have we got on the spacecraft that’s good?
I believe all of us, including me, get too caught up in the ‘What haven’t we done’ List instead of taking even 5 minutes to bask in all the things WE HAVE DONE which is good.
When the road to improvement seems so long, and the bricks you’re building seem way too many; it’s really important to shift focus and remember to celebrate the little wins along the way to building your brick RTO business.
One of the things I suggest to all my RTO clients and audiences is to develop a WINS WALL (or even a DOOR if space is limited).
Using coloured post it notes, everyone writes up the little wins for the day, the week, the month so you start to see all the wonderful and positive things you and your team are achieving every day. It can be very motivating and provide such energy and momentum, especially when the days are a bit tough.
Things you can post on the wall can include:
- Number of student commencements, progressions and completions
- Procedures developed
- Training sessions conducted
- Number of students helped through student support
- Number of assessments marked
- Ticks when the AVETMISS report has no errors (or less errors than last month)
- Tenders written and gained
- Improvements in financial numbers
- How many days everyone has not eaten lunch at their desk for the month
- How many days everyone has not checked email outside of work hours
- Fun things which have happened with students or in the office
As you can see, the list is endless. My suggestion is to balance it between statistics (quantitative) and the touchy feely stuff (qualitative) and ensure it’s recording all the good little stuff which gets you to eventually tick off the big stuff.
It takes a long time to build a simple, profitable (and compliant) RTO business so take the time to remember all the bricks which helped you get there.
High risk leadership beckons many, but few accept the call.
When you think about it, everything we do can be deemed ‘high risk’.
Why? Because there’s the chance it won’t work out and we’ll have to start again or re-think the problem to come up with a different solution.
Well if that’s the worst thing that can happen, is that really that bad? Mistakes happen. It’s what we do next which is critical so are you accepting the call to high risk leadership?
Is everyone in your team accepting the call?
Be brave… you’ll be amazed at the results.
And here’s my final thought:
Always hire people who are smarter and better than you are, and learn with them.
This has always been my philosophy, both as a leader and coach; and in my work and business ethic. I’m driven to leaving people and organisations in a better place than I found them, and I can only do that with the help of others. And I can only improve my business with the help of smarter and better people.
