When did you last remember the good stuff?

Santa                         I think the milk’s a little sour.

Sarah                        It’s soy milk.

Santa                         Huh?

Sarah                        You said you were lactose intolerant.

Santa                         I did say that, didn’t I?  Thank you for remembering.

I love this scene in the movie when Santa comes back to Sarah, whom he visited last year, and she left him soy milk instead of normal milk because he said he was lactose intolerant.

And not only is it wonderful that Sarah remembered this special detail for Santa – such a big thing to remember for a little girl.

But I believe the even more wonderful moment is when Santa finally remembers this and says the beautiful line:  Thank you for remembering.

People Lesson

So when was the last time you thanked you team (and yourself) for remembering the little details?

Details which may have made all the difference to them…to a student….to you.

Too often we forget to thank people for being considerate and going over and above what their job entails which in turn, brings a little sunshine into someone else’s day.

And you might think this isn’t necessary and that people should just ‘know’ they are valued at your RTO.  But funnily enough, people aren’t mindreaders and unfortunately, common sense and customer service is not as common as it once was in the workplace.

What’s Next

As the year draws to a close, have everyone at your RTO including you, brainstorm all the wonderful little details each person remembered which made a difference at your RTO workplace.

And here’s my final tip:

Once you’ve done this, you need to actually share all this good stuff with your team, and in a public way (ie read aloud) and not in an email.

As some people may be uncomfortable in sharing their thoughts publicly, maybe have everyone write their ideas down on coloured paper or post its, drop then into a Christmas box or jar and then read them out at the Christmas party or on the last day in the office.

What a wonderful and special way to end the year and have everyone leave for their break on a high.
