How often do you hold up the mirror?
For many people running businesses including RTOs, the word ‘feedback’ is filled with dread and trepidation.
Why? Because, if they are really honest with themselves, they know the truth hurts and that things aren’t going as well as they’re saying out loud (or to themselves).
So instead of embracing any issues which may be bubbling at the surface of their staff or their clients; they either avoid the situation completely, or ask for feedback to placate and then ignore or dismiss what they’re told.
Part 3 Principle 8 Try to honestly see things from the other person’s point of view
Carnegie’s Principle is all about putting yourself in the other person’s shoes and seeing things from their perspective.
So when was the last time you did this with:
- Yourself by holding up the honesty mirror?
- Your Team so you really know what they do, the problems they face every day, and the hidden opportunities to make things easier for them?
- Your Students so you experience the real student journey within your RTO?
I know this may not be the advice you want to hear, but if you’re not doing this on a regular basis, be it through face to face chats, sitting in on training sessions etc; then how will you ever build a profitable RTO business which everyone loves?
And if you don’t think your team will give you honest feedback because of your past behaviour of All Talk and No Action, then please get someone in to help you vent, reset and rebuild.
And here’s my final tip:
If you want the magic phrase to ‘stop arguments, eliminate ill feeling, create goodwill and make the other person listen attentively’, Carnegie says it’s this:
I don’t blame you one iota for feeling as you do. If I were you, I would undoubtedly feel just as you do.
