Are you building on the wonderfulness of your people?
Tigger The wonderful thing about Tiggers is Tiggers are wonderful things…
But the most wonderful thing about Tiggers is I’m the only one.
Think about the last time you interviewed a potential staff member for your RTO – what questions did you ask?
Or if you don’t have staff yet, think about the questions you might ask them in an interview?
I bet two questions were or will be something like these:
- Describe a situation where you had to manage conflict. What was involved and what did you do?
- Describe your weaknesses and how you think they will impact on working at our RTO?
I know these are the stock standard questions we ask people in an interview, but let’s really look at the negative messages we are giving this person as a result.
There will be conflict here so you need to know how to deal with it. AND
We want to know what’s wrong with you so we can see if that will fit in here.
Now we don’t mean to do this but wouldn’t it be better to focus on the strengths and all the wonderful things a person could bring to your RTO, and how they can help you and your business?
Imagine how different your recruitment and selection process would be if you focused on how they will help rather than hinder your RTO business. If you did this, you are seeing if they will fit into your culture which is the most important thing; and by default, you are saying to the candidate: This is a great place to work where we value the wonderfulness of our people.
Remember: In the majority of cases, you can teach someone HOW to do something (skills); it’s their behaviour and attitude which creates the most issues.

Tigger: Jump? Tiggers don’t jump! They bounce.
When was the last time you and your team bounced into work, into a task, into a training session? If it’s been a while, what’s one thing you can do to bring the bounce back into the workplace.
Pooh: If people are upset because you’ve forgotten something, console them by letting them know you didn’t forget – you just weren’t remembering.
Remember that everyone, including you, will have an occasionally Whoops moment. However, when these become always rather than sometimes, that’s when you need to step in and find out why.
Christopher Robin: Always be yourself
This is very good advice… as long as you are always being your very best YOU!
