Are You Enjoying Or Enduring Your Job and Your RTO?

Why it's time to take stock of what's really important
As you probably know, sport is in my DNA and there've been two significant events over the last month which have stopped me in my tracks.

The first was Ash Barty retiring from tennis and the second was the tragic and unexpected death of Shane Warne.

Both have touched me in different ways but the clear message from both of these amazing athletes and wonderfully giving people was to go out and have fun, because when you're happy, good things will happen.
FOCUS:  Manage Your Team
As much as I'm going to miss seeing Ash Barty play tennis, and I've been lucky enough to see her twice at the Brisbane International, what I admire most is she finished her professional tennis career on her terms. She realised she had nothing left to give to the sport she loves and winning the US Grand Slam wasn't one of her outstanding goals.

I also loved that she didn't give in to media pressure to tell them what she was going to do next. Her authenticity and integrity are two of the many reasons I believe Ash Barty is a wonderful person and role model for all of us.

Ash's decision made me think about when Nick Riewoldt discussed the challenges and motivation needed to keep going as an AFL footballer. As an anxious player, he had to balance the fine line between enjoying his role as captain and key forward (aka the job), and enduring it when the physical and mental energy becomes too much and you're just going through the motions.

When your motivation and drive changes from enjoyment to enduring, this is the time to get out and do something different.

Does this sound like you and your RTO?
Unfortunately, Nick's words ring true for the many Owners, CEOs, Managers and staff I've coached, presented to and connected with over my 25 plus years of working in RTO Land.
And it saddens me when more people are enduring rather than enjoying RTO Land.
Because that's not supposed to be how we view ourselves, our job and our workplace, is it?
Now I'm a realist. I know every day is not rosy.
Things happen which frustrate us.
There's always going to be tasks in our job which we don't enjoy doing.
And there will be people at our workplace and students we don't really like but we need to find a way to work together; for the good of our RTO business, our integrity, our professionalism, our reputation.

This week, I posted an article by Your CEO Mentor in my RTO Business LinkedIn Group which looks at The Burnout Curve and the linkages between drops in productivity (work output and satisfaction) and job satisfaction (sense of futility and hopelessness).

The Burnout Curve showed ten (10) reasons why productivity and job satisfaction decreases:
1. Working for an incompetent leader
2. Inability to achieve goals
3. An oppressive workload
4. Constantly changing deadlines and targets
5. Inadequate resourcing
6. Accountability without empowerment
7. Lack of confidence without empowerment
8. Over-functioning for others
9. Lack of balance at home and work
10. Uncertainty and concern for the future
Now whilst we all can probably related to the last one, how many of these reasons relate to you, your team and your RTO?
And if there's more than one reason, what's your tipping point to change this?
We spend too much time 'working' so it's time to take stock of what's really important and start enjoying our jobs and workplaces again.
What's Next?
If you're enjoying working in RTO Land, then I'm really pleased for you because job satisfaction is what we're all seeking. And if you'd like to share, I'd love to hear why.

But if instead, you're enduring your job and maybe your RTO, then here's some food for thought.

• How long has it been like this?

• Have you spoken to Management, the Owner or your Board about it?

• Why are you enduring this?

• What price are you paying by choosing enduring over enjoyment (eg work hours, physical and mental health, time with family and friends)?

• If you could re-design your job and/or RTO so it becomes enjoyable again, what would it look like?

I know for some of you, it will feel like you don't have a choice – to leave or to change things – but we always have a choice.

If you don't like something change it.
If you can't change it, change the way you think about it.
Mary Engelbreit
And here's my final thought:
If you watched the Shane Warne Memorial Service, it was clear how much he touched so many people's lives; not only with cricketing prowess but more importantly, his generosity of time, money and spirit.
We learnt he chose spending time with his beloved children over the many commercial opportunities which came his way.
He said he wanted to make the most out of every second of his life which I certainly believed he did in spades, and he wanted to make every ball an event.
So how can you make every moment in your job and at your RTO workplace an event?
And if things aren't going well, then how can you change your attitude or circumstances from enduring to enjoyment so you can re-gain your passion, energy, authenticity, self worth and job satisfaction?
Good luck
